What is real food, anyway? We might have grown up thinking we were eating healthy because we had broccoli on our dinner plate or lettuce in our sandwiches.  There are lots of resources out there to help us figure out what ‘real food’ is.  Whole30 is really big right now…  There are many diets for healing all kinds of things. AIP, SCD, Gluten Free, GFCF, LCHF, ketogenic, Paleo, Whole30, etc. These are in addition to the diets we might have been hearing about for the last 30 years.  The Zone diet, Low fat, Atkins, Mediterranean, Baby food diet, Soup diet, and probably a ton I have never heard of.  Everyone is different and that’s why some of these work for some people and don’t work for others. Low fat is not completely healthy (we really need fats but the right kinds).  When you go in more of a real food direction (like the first list), you are more likely to be providing your body with needed nutrients. I know the Atkins diet worked for many, but some people consumed very large quantities of protein and fried foods or processed meats, which is not healthy.

Here is real food: anything (with one ingredient) that comes from a healthy plant or animal

  • A healthy animal is not an animal receiving antibiotics on a regular basis or crowded into a pen indoors for its entire life.  A healthy animal is one fed its natural diet and has space to live and gets to be outside. Think organic and pasture raised.
  • A healthy plant is not one that is doused in pesticide to speed up the harvesting process (yes, that is done with wheat).

Vegetables, green veggies, root veggies, lettuces, orange veggies, purple veggies, etc. fish, beef, pork, chicken, turkey, eggs, butter, homemade yogurt, unrefined salt, herbs, good fats (certain fats are needed and good for us! click here for fats)
